12 common topographical test mistakes — and how to fix them

The mistakes that repeatedly turn an otherwise sensible route into a weak attempt, plus a practical fix for each one.

How to improve faster

Keep a short error log. After each attempt, write one sentence describing the main mistake and one sentence describing the rule you will apply next time. Ten specific corrections are more useful than ten vague promises to 'be more careful'.

Separate route knowledge from mouse control

If you knew the correct roads but the line was messy, practise plotting. If the line was neat but the road sequence was wrong, practise route planning. Mixing those two problems together makes progress feel slower than it is.

Why the same mistake can appear in different forms

A one-way error does not always look like an obvious wrong-way arrow. It can appear when you reach a road from the wrong side, when you choose a turn that is not available from your carriageway, or when a short side road only works in the opposite direction. That is why the habit to practise is checking the movement, not memorising one symbol.

The same applies to structures. A bridge, tunnel or flyover error may begin several roads earlier because the wrong approach was chosen. Review the decision that created the mistake, not only the point where the line finally became impossible.

Build an error hierarchy

When an attempt contains several problems, fix the most structural one first. A wrong corridor matters more than a slightly messy line. Travelling the wrong way down a road matters more than placing one point a few pixels off centre. Prioritising errors helps you avoid wasting time polishing a route that is fundamentally wrong.

A useful review question

After every route ask: if I had to do this again without seeing the accepted line, what one rule would I apply differently? If you can answer that in a single sentence, the feedback has become something you can use. If the answer is only 'I need to be more careful', the review is still too vague.
